HISTORY:

The City of Buford was originally founded on August 24th 1872 under the name "The Town of Buford." The name was offically changed to "The City of Buford" in 1896. The city was named after Colonel Algernon S. Buford of Virginia. Colonel Buford was the president of the Atlanta Richmond Air-Line Railway based in Richmond, VA. The Air-Line Railway ran a train from Atlanta to Charlotte through Buford, and they needed a lunch stop along the way. Buford was in the running as a potenial location for this lucrative stop. In an attempt to win the railroad company over, the town leaders decided to name the town after the President of the Air-Line Railway, A.S. Buford. Once the city got its first break, it never looked back. Thanks to far sighted community leaders and progressive business men, Buford was the largest city in Gwinnett County for more than 60 years.

Currently Buford's population sits around 11,000 people. It controls its own school system and has several recreation options to children and adults.
